When Community Shows Up: Supporting Military Families After the July 4 Floods
On July 4, while many families across the country were celebrating with barbecues and fireworks, dozens of military families in San Angelo, Texas were facing a very different reality.
Severe flooding swept through the area, damaging homes, destroying personal property, and upending daily life with little warning. In the days that followed, it became clear that 38 military families had been directly impacted — many of them young families, first-time homeowners, or households navigating the demands of military training and service. Collectively, these families sustained an estimated $1 million in damages to their homes and belongings.
In the midst of uncertainty and loss, one thing became immediately clear: this community was not going to face it alone.
A Collective Effort, A Meaningful Impact
In response to the floods, Goodfellow Spouses & Community (GSC) launched a targeted fundraising effort to provide direct financial support to the affected families. What happened next was nothing short of extraordinary.
Through the generosity of donors across San Angelo, the military community, and supporters from around the world, GSC raised over $86,000 in a matter of weeks. Every donation — large and small — represented more than dollars. It represented care, solidarity, and a shared commitment to taking care of military families when it matters most.
To ensure responsible stewardship and equitable distribution, funds are being disbursed in partnership with the First Sergeant Council and Operation Warm Heart, organizations with direct insight into family needs and established processes for emergency assistance.
This collaboration allows support to reach families quickly, thoughtfully, and with dignity — helping cover urgent expenses such as temporary housing, essential household items, and recovery costs not fully met by insurance.
More Than Financial Relief
While fundraising totals are easy to measure, the true impact goes far beyond numbers.
For families navigating loss while their service member is in training or fulfilling mission requirements, this support provides breathing room — a reminder that their sacrifices are seen and that their community stands with them. It restores a sense of stability during an otherwise overwhelming moment and reinforces a core truth of military life: when one family is impacted, we rally together.
Moving Forward With Gratitude
Fundraising for flood relief has now concluded, but the work of recovery continues. GSC remains committed to supporting military families in San Angelo through advocacy, outreach, and direct assistance — not just in moments of crisis, but every day.
To every donor, volunteer, partner, and advocate who helped make this effort possible: thank you. Your generosity made a tangible difference in the lives of 38 families, and your support will be felt long after the waters recede.
Together, we proved once again what is possible when community leads with compassion.
