The Heart of giving: GSC awards over $35,000 in Scholarships and grants
Goodfellow Spouses & Community Awards $16,000 in Scholarships and Celebrates $19,000+ in Community Grants
San Angelo, TX – May 17, 2025 – Goodfellow Spouses & Community (GSC), a nonprofit of military-connected spouses, hosted its annual Scholarship Banquet this week. The evening celebrated both the academic achievements of local students and the community impact made possible through GSC’s charitable programs.
A Night of Recognition and Connection
Held at the Powell Event Center on Goodfellow Air Force Base, the banquet brought together scholarship recipients, community leaders, military families, and volunteers. Guests enjoyed an evening dedicated to recognition, gratitude, and the power of community.
“Our scholarship recipients represent the very best of our military and San Angelo communities: resilient, hardworking, and driven to make a difference,” said GSC President-Elect Alexandra Luning. “We’re also proud to support local nonprofits and initiatives that strengthen families and create lasting impact.”
This year, GSC awarded $16,000 in scholarships to students pursuing higher education. In addition, the club highlighted more than $18,000 in community grants distributed over the past year to local organizations supporting children, families, education, and the arts.
Supporting Local Organizations
The GSC Community Grants Program provides funding to initiatives that directly benefit both military-connected families and the greater San Angelo area. Past recipients have included child and youth programs, educational efforts, and nonprofit organizations making a difference in family life.
“These grants extend the reach of our mission beyond base gates, supporting organizations that make San Angelo a stronger, more connected place for everyone,” said Luning.
Powered by Volunteers and the Thrift Store
Both the scholarships and grants are fully funded through sales at the GSC Thrift Store, an all-volunteer-run shop located on Goodfellow Air Force Base.
“The thrift store is more than a place to shop—it’s the beating heart of our charitable mission,” explained Thrift Store Coordinator Leah Jewett. “Every item donated and every dollar spent goes directly back into scholarships and community grants.”
More Than Scholarships and Grants
Goodfellow Spouses & Community has a long tradition of uplifting military families and giving back to San Angelo. In addition to its scholarship and grant programs, GSC hosts social events, creates volunteer opportunities, and organizes its beloved annual Cookie Caper, delivering holiday treats to service members stationed at Goodfellow.
